English italiano

Denys Rinpoche is the direct spiritual heir of Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche. He is the founder and superior of the Sangha Rimay, an international community of Dharma practitioners recognized by the French government in 1994.

Born in Paris in 1949, he studied medicine and philosophy searching a way to find authentic wisdom. He discovered the Buddha tradition and visited India for the first time in 1968. During this trip, he met His Holiness Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche.

He became his disciple and joined him in his monastery of Sonada, on the spurs of the Indian Himalayas. For nearly ten years, he studied the sacred Tibetan writings and practiced in retreat. During this same period, in the rimay spirit, he received the central teachings and practices from the greatest Tibetan masters from different schools. He also studied at the Vishva Bharati University in Santiniketan where he graduated in Indo-Tibetan studies.

At this time he became Kalu Rinpoche’s personal assistant and interpreter during his first trips to the West and participated in this way to the establishment of the first Dharma centres in Europe.

In 1976, he completed the traditional three-year retreat accomplished for the first time in the West. On his exit, Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche entrusted him with the management of spiritual matters at the Karma Ling Institute in Savoie, he made him a Drupon, a master of three-year retreats, and in 1984, gave him the authority of a Vajracarya, master of vajrayana in charge of continuing his lineage.

Having become one of the principal spiritual heirs of Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche, Denys Rinpoche has accompanied numerous Westerners on the way to spiritual awakening over the last thirty years. His double education, academic in France and as a lama in the Tibetan tradition, along with long yogi retreats make him an accomplished teacher. He is particularly appreciated for the clarity of his presentation of the essence of the way of the Buddha.

President of the European Union of Buddhists over a long period, he now works on a number of projects which aim to promote the fundamental human values, interfaith cooperation and ecology.

Denys Rinpoche and the Sangha Rimay have woven special spiritual connections with Kundun the Dalai Lama, (invited to the Karma Ling Institute in 1993 and 1997) the Gyalwang Karmapa Orgyen Trinley Dorje (invited in 2010), his Excellency Tai Situpa, Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche, the Vidyadhara Trungpa Rinpoche as well as Chogyal Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche.
